Carbon emissions legislation and how can you reduce your footprint?

The UK government's Climate Change Bill commits the UK to an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by the year 2050. To do this the UK government is releasing new legislation on businesses to cut carbon emissions.

Carbon footprinting is one of the hot topics of sustainability and in the print sector, paper is the centre of attention. This is because it is the single biggest source of carbon emissions in the print process, outweighing printing and transportation by a significant margin. It also constitutes the biggest cost in a print job, which means print buyers now face the difficult juggling act of keeping both costs and carbon down.

Unfortunately for the paper industry, paper is key to a printed product’s carbon footprint, contributing 50-70%. It is, therefore, our primary focus in reducing carbon footprint, says Colette Mahon, chair of the PPA’s carbon footprint group.

We have compiled some simple tips for reducing your business' carbon footprint so you can start making a difference now...

1. Use recycled cartridges - Using re-manufactured cartridges will save companies at least 40% of their internal printing cost. The company will not only have cost implications, but can make an impact on the environment as well, as the non-biodegradable plastic heading to landmines will reduce considerably.

2. Use recycled paper- This statistic should tell the whole story: one ton of paper from recycled pulp saves 17 trees, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 7,000 gallons of water, 4,200 kilowatt hours, 390 gallons of oil, and eliminates 60 pounds of air pollutants. Alexander Rose Creative's print and management solutions use environmentally sound resources (FSC certified or 100% recycled).

3. Duplexing prints - Duplexing prints will reduce the paper used at most by 50% which can protect against deforestation, and the statistic mentioned above can be applied again.
